Why Democracy Is Being Questioned: Opposition Parties Against New Parliament Inauguration By PM On 28 May

As the inaugural ceremony of the New Parliament Building draws near, opposition parties withdraw from its attendance claiming an assault on Democracy, owing to the opening being done by the PM and not the President of India, invoking trolls by netizens and defiance by SC.

Democracy represents the people; common man elects another common man whom they think has the wits to think and take action in the good of the nation.

In India, basically a Parliamentary democracy is noticed to be more common, where the elected members assemble together and discuss (not fight) on the latest amendments, laws and acts concerning the good of their people and the nation.

In short, a Parliament comprises of leaders who show a direction to others. The recent boycott is a question in itself whether the common man has selected the right leader representing for them.

19 parties opposing the current government released a joint statement on 24 May exclaiming their withdrawal from the inauguration ceremony of the New Parliament owing to the decision made by the PM to shoulder the opening by himself, and considered it as a big assault on the democracy of India.

Is Question On Democracy Comme il faut?

The question on Democracy raises a doubt whether the elected leaders of the nation truly understand the essence and meaning of such a power word.

From Class 9 itself, an Indian student grasps the understanding of Democracy. On a light note, perhaps in the latter-day case, if a class 9 student is asked if the current boycott is against the democracy or for the democracy, he or she would definitely say ‘against’.

What the countrymen need to realize is that only the building in which the representatives assembled for the session is being modified into a new one, because the 93-year older building complained of inadequacy of space.

When the commotion rises up against the New Parliament Inauguration, it is quite requisite to understand that the structural issues and space constraints in the Old Parliament building was also called up and rested in the hands of the same parties.

Soul Of Democracy Sucked Out': 19 Opposition Parties To Boycott New Parliament Opening

The opposition parties clearly state the soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament and that they find no value in the new building.

True to the base, opposition means opposing something or something, but does opposing the Parliament, the very temple of democracy do any good for the individuals or a nation as a whole, or symbolize the definition of Democracy, which the opposition have confronted themselves.

Is Article 79 Challenged?

The joint statement of the like-minded parties exclaim that sidelining the President during the inauguration of the New Parliament is a grave offense against Article 79 of the Indian Constitution.

It is true that in India, the President heads the Parliament. And yes, the President practiced that in the Old Parliament building, and would definitely do the same in the new building as well.

Without a matter of doubt, the President would reside over the Parliament as usual as per her dutiful obligations, and the inauguration being done by the Prime Minister instead of the President does not in any manner sideline the President from her responsibilities towards the nation.

It is not whether who inaugurates the New Parliament Building; the question is how much respect is given to the Parliament by the so-called leaders of various parties. And even if 1 per cent of respect and power is yielded by he ministers with regard to their ministerial duties in their respective parties, this sort of boycott would never have risen.

Further, if the President had any issue with the Prime Minister inaugurating the New Parliament, there would definitely have been a word summoned from her part, instead of the rivals and opposition parties as in this scenario.

The 19 parties seen to oppose the said inaugural ceremony taking place on 28 May 2023 include Indian National Congress, Kerala Congress (Mani), Trinamool Congress, National Congress Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Indian Union Muslim League, Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Shiv Sena (UBT), National Conference, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Revolutionary Socialist Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The President has not opposed to the inauguration being performed by the Prime Minister.

Contrary To Its Unity In Diversity Tag

When India is seen to mark its transition from the developing to the developed countries, another question mark to be confronted is whether Indians are literally developed? For if they were, they would not have been showing boycotts and commotions every now and then.

When India is already breaking from the inside because of the disputed notions that each political party and individual carries, then as a nation, India is critically standing at a major threat from its real political enemies
globally.

As soon as the news of the boycott got publicized, netizens flooded the twitter with memes and trolled the opposition parties saying that they should be boycotting the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections as well.

What’s more, the Supreme Court also refused to entertain the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the New Parliament Building to be inaugurated by the President, and seemed to be dissatisfied with the arguments over Article 79 and Article 87 countering the Inauguration.

Amidst all this uproar, the nation should not forget what last of their leaders, Atal Bihari Vajpayee alerted them by proclaiming the pearl of wisdom that Governments will come and go, but this nation should stand tall.

The Indian Nation would surely stand tall if all the major and minor political parties and leaders stand together in unity, sidelining their differences, and not forget the contribution each of them makes for the betterment of the
nation in a whole.

In a nutshell, asserting challenges and provoking public interests in the name of democracy does not in any fashion upholds the spirit of ‘Democracy’.
