WhatsApp Pink Scam 2023 : What Is It and How to Avoid Falling Victim to It

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has been plagued by various scams over the years, and the latest addition to the list is the WhatsApp Pink scam. This scam explicitly targets Android users and significantly threatens their privacy and security.

The North Region cybercrime wing tweeted a warning titled “WHATSAPP PINK – A Red Alert For Android Users.” The government’s cybersecurity agencies have also issued an alert over the rise in Pink WhatsApp scam incidents.
Under this scheme, fraudsters and hackers send bogus messages over WhatsApp to target consumers. According to reports, the message contains a link asking users to download WhatsApp Pink, a false version of the messaging service. According to reports, con artists are posing as various people and promising that the next version will have a better user interface and additional features.

The WhatsApp Pink scam is a deceptive campaign that lures Android users into downloading a malicious application claiming to offer an enhanced version of WhatsApp with a new pink interface. Scammers exploit users’ curiosity and desire for unique features, tricking them into believing that the pink version is exclusive and more advanced. Once users fall for the scam and download the fraudulent app, they unwittingly expose their devices to various potential risks.
Modus Operandi of the Scam:
- Distribution: The scammers typically circulate the WhatsApp Pink link through social media platforms, instant messaging services, or even via WhatsApp groups. A public alert on this WhatsApp message, known as “Pink WhatsApp”, was released by the Mumbai Police. In their warning, law enforcement officers cautioned the public about a new scam growing on the site. It has been highlighted how important it is to avoid clicking the link or downloading the associated programmes.
The alert states, “The rumours of a ‘New Pink Look WhatsApp with more capabilities’ that have lately circulated among WhatsApp users are hoaxes that might result in the dangerous software hijacking of your phone. Scammers frequently develop a range of new ploys and techniques to seduce trusting consumers into falling for their traps and committing online fraud. To be safe and secure in the digital age, consumers must be Aware, Alert, and Attentive to these types of scams.
The Mumbai Police have forewarned the public about a false WhatsApp message that has recently gone viral. This message gives the misleading impression that it would send an update with new features and a colour change for the WhatsApp logo.
According to a police warning, the URL that is part of the message is a phishing attempt. The user stands the danger of having their device infected by opening the link, which might give fraudsters access to their information or allow them to use it without their consent.
If users follow the Pink WhatsApp link, they risk experiencing unfavourable results, the Mumbai Police have cautioned. Some of these risks include financial loss, identity theft, spam attacks, unauthorized access to stored photographs and contact information, and even complete loss of control over mobile devices.
However, the police have released a few instructions to safeguard consumers from phishing attempts. The authorities have instructed users to immediately delete the phoney WhatsApp by entering their smartphone settings, choosing WhatsApp with the pink logo in Apps, and then deleting it.
Users have also been advised to exercise caution when clicking links from dubious websites unless they have first verified their validity. Only trusted sources, such as the official Google Play Store, iOS App Store, etc., are to be used by users to download or update apps. Additionally, platform users have been told only to send links or messages to other parties if they have received proper authentication or verification. To prevent abuse, users are also advised to avoid sharing any personal or financial information online with anybody, including passwords, login credentials, and credit or debit card information.
