On the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, which is operated by the central government, inaugurated India’s first dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD) for the transgender community. This initiative aims to address the challenges faced by transgender individuals when seeking healthcare services, primarily stemming from discomfort, fear of discrimination, and social stigma.
By establishing a dedicated OPD for the transgender community, the hospital seeks to provide a safe and inclusive healthcare environment where transgender individuals can access medical care without fear of prejudice or bias. Additionally, to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 73rd birthday, the hospital organized a blood donation camp, reflecting the spirit of community service and philanthropy in alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision and commitment to public welfare.
Dr. Ajay Shukla, the medical superintendent of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, inaugurated the hospital’s pioneering initiative, the dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD) for the transgender community, along with the blood donation camp. This initiative is designed to address the specific healthcare challenges faced by transgender individuals, including discomfort, fear of discrimination, and societal biases when accessing medical services.
The dedicated OPD for transgender individuals will operate every Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm, providing a consistent and accessible healthcare service tailored to their needs. It offers a comprehensive range of specialized healthcare services, including an endocrinology facility with hormone analysis and free hormonal treatment, a psychiatry facility with clinical-psychological assessment, and plastic surgery services.
In addition, dermatology, urology, pediatrics services, and related blood investigations will be available at the OPD. To ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment, the facility will also feature gender-neutral and transgender-friendly washroom facilities.

This discomfort and fear of discrimination deterred them from seeking healthcare in government-run facilities.
Dr. Shukla also noted that many transgender individuals resorted to private healthcare facilities for their medical needs. However, these private facilities often come with a high cost of treatment, making healthcare unaffordable for a significant portion of the transgender community. Consequently, many transgender individuals were left without access to essential medical care.
