Honor 8X First Impressions: A Mid-range Smartphone with Premium Looks
16 October 2018, India:
Today, Honor launched the successor of Honor 7X – Honor 8X in India. Honor 7X was a popular smartphone and it helped the company to gain popularity in the market. Let’s see the first impressions of the newly launched Honor 8X.
Design
The smartphone feels premium in hand. The build quality is good. The smartphone has glass back, which gives it a premium look. However the bad thing about glass is that it breaks easily (if compared to metal), but you can use a cover to protect it.
On the right side of 8X, volume rocker and power button is present. At the bottom, primary mic, a micro-USB port (for charging and data transfer), speaker and a 3.5mm Headphone Jack is present.
Micro-USB looks dated as many mid-range smartphones have started giving USB Type-C port. But thumbs up to Honor for giving a 3.5 mm Headphone Jack which is quickly being removed from smartphones.
At the left sim tray is present. The sim tray has slots for two nano sims and a Micro-SD card. It has dedicated Micro-SD card slot. A secondary noise cancellation mic is present at the top of Honor 8X.
Fingerprint sensor is present at the rear side of the smartphone. The placement of fingerprint sensor is good, and reaching to the fingerprint sensor is easy.
Coming to the display, the smartphone has a 6.5 inch Full HD+ Display. The display has a Notch at the top, which brings the screen aspect ratio to 19.5:9. The screen resolution is 2340×1080 pixels. The pixel density is 397 ppi. The smartphone has 91 percent screen-to-body ratio. The display is TÜV Rheinland certified. The smartphone has a eye comfort mode.
The company didn’t mention any Gorilla Glass Protection on screen during launch.
The smartphone comes in three colour variants – Black, Blue and Red.

Honor 8X is powered by Kirin 710. Kirin 710 is an octa core processor. It has 4 x Cortex A73 cores which are clocked at 2.2 GHz and 4 x Cortex A53 cores which are clocked at 1.7 GHz. The smartphone has Mali-G51 MP4 GPU for graphical tasks. The smartphone will also have GPU Turbo Boost feature.
RAM and Storage
Honor 8X come sin three RAM+storage variants. The base model has 4 GB RAM and 64 GB Internal Storage. A 6 GB RAM and 64 GB Internal storage variant is also there. And the highest variant has 6 GB RAM and 128 GB Internal Storage.
Battery
Honor 8X has a 3,750 mAh battery, which is good and should easily handle one day of casual usage (considering the past record of Honor smartphones).
The company has bundled a 10W charger in the box which is not so fast.
Camera
Honor 8X has dual rear camera. The primary rear camera is of 20 MP and has f/1.8 aperture. The secondary rear camera is a depth sensing camera of 2 MP.
8X has 16 MP front camera. The front camera has f/2.0 aperture.
Portrait mode is available on both front and rear camera. The camera also has AI features. It recognises 22 different scenarios and it applies custom exposure and colour corrections accordingly.
The camera looks good at the first impressions, but it need to be tested in real life scenario for the overall result.

Honor 8X runs on EMUI 8.2 on top of Android Oreo 8.1. The smartphone is expected to receive EMUI 9 (in Android Pie) update by the first half of next year.
