China’s multi-billion dollar artificial intelligence (AI) business is growing quickly. The artificial intelligence market is estimated to be worth RMB 150 billion (US$23.196 billion) as of 2021, and by 2025, it is expected to be worth RMB 400 billion (US$61.855 billion).

AI War Between US And China

With 629 of these most-cited publications in 2012, the United States took the lead, followed by China (425). Later, China made rapid advancements and eventually passed the United States in 2019. 7,401 of the most-cited papers in 2021 came from China, outpacing American papers by about 70%.

China is prepared to keep up with this trend. According to a 2017 government plan, it wants to create next-generation AI and become the world’s leading hub for AI innovation by 2030. The top scientific organization in the country, the government-affiliated Chinese Academy of Sciences, has extensive research capacity. Another hub for AI is Beijing’s public research university Tsinghua University.

At the carefully watched Central Economic Work Conference in December, when President Xi Jinping addressed the need to hastily advance research, development, and implementation of cutting-edge technologies, including AI, was emphasized. However, Chinese businesses are making progress in this area. Only one Chinese company made the top 10 in research output for 2012. American athletes still have a significant advantage in the most popular research as of 2016. However, in 2021, Chinese companies Tencent, Alibaba, Huawei, and State Grid Corp. claimed four of the top ten positions in terms of volume and citations.

State Grid, a government-owned energy distributor, has one of the top AI research departments among Chinese businesses. Big data gathered from hundreds of millions of smart meters has made this possible. Technology is being developed by State Grid to forecast power consumption and identify electrical grid issues. The top-ranked search engine in China, Baidu, ranked 11th in both the number and quality of AI research. The technology juggernaut is introducing a fleet of fully autonomous taxis.
