Will curb fake news, considering edit button for a tweet: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey
The social networking platform Twitter has been considering a tweet edit functionality, where netizen would be allowed to change their tweet, said Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey.
Dorsey who is in India for the first time, in a fireside chat with students at Delhi IIT said, “We have been considering edit (button) for quite some time but have to do it the right way. We have to make sure that we are actually solving the predominant reason why people do it first and not make something that takes away from the public record, because I think it is really critical that we preserve it.”
However, he did not reveal about the timeline of the feature.
A lot of people want the edit button because they want to quickly fix a mistake they have done, be it a misspelling or a wrong link. That’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time, he said.
He also said why Twitter does not have an edit button, ‘is because people may change their opinions by editing the original tweet,’ Dorsey further reasoned.
Taking up next question related to rise of fake news, he said it’s a multivariable problem.
“Our job is to make sure lies or fake news don’t get many impressions & reach. We have to find multiple fixes to tackle this problem,” Dorsey said.
In May, the social networking site identified and challenged around 40 million fake accounts–up from 6.4 million in December and 3.2 million in September 2017.
Meanwhile, he also gave some career advice to young buds giving his own example. First, find who you are and what your purpose is and do whatever it takes, Dorsey said to students. Even being on Twitter, don’t pay much attention to how many followers you have. Focus on the number of conversations you are contributing to. If your tweet is powerful if people respond to your tweet. You are doing good, he suggested.
Twitter chief is also expected to meet IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during his week-long tour in India to majorly talk about ways to curbing malicious content on a social media platform.
India will have the general election next year, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have been accused of being misused by the users for influence and spreading misinformation.
Dorsey wants to ensure that there is no misuse of the platform.
Twitter has been betting big on technology and with the help of Machine Learning and other partnerships with third-parties, it will improve its platform. The social networking site has some 330 million users worldwide.
