Russia himself targets smaller nations like Ukraine to display more power, so Russia expects the same from everyone. It thinks all other countries will eventually get entangled, leading to World War to showcase their supreme authority.

He said that while a new global war was not inescapable, the chances of a nuclear conflict were mounting and were more effective than worries concerning climate change.
