Tech firms are revoking job offers to the students over delayed onboarding process

Several students who were offered employment opportunities by the top IT firms- Infosys, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra- have confirmed that their offer letter has been revoked after the companies delayed the onboarding process for months. The candidates did not receive any further clarification on the grounds of rejection as claimed by the students.

The livelihood of 1000 thousand students all around the country has been jeopardized. The students and the employees applied for the job a year ago.

These students and employees applied for the respective jobs in September 2021, and upon further notice, the joining process was to be completed by the end of August 2022.

An engineering graduate from Bhopal received a rejection letter from Infosys on September 28, six months later after receiving the offer. The letter mentioned that she did not meet the academic qualifications criteria, and thus, her offer stands null and void. The letter was received via email.

However, Pavitra clarified that she had fulfilled all the mentioned criteria for the desired position, i.e., 60 percent marks in class 10, 12, and undergraduate courses. She said that her grades are above the cut-off percentage that makes one eligible for the job. Despite these circumstances, she received a rejection mail.

A similar situation has been observed among many students. Bhavna, a Computer Science Graduate from Vijaynagar, received a mail from Wipro. The mail was received four months after she had received an offer letter. The mail stated the following-” We can not take your candidature forward as you have not been compliant with Wipro’s assessment guidelines.”

She was rejected even after fulfilling all the grade criteria and submitting all the desired documents. Furthermore, the company has not provided any clarification reflecting the rejection process,

Vivek has received a job offer letter from Tech Mahindra and has also encountered the same. He received his offer letter three months ago and got a rejection mail on September 22.

He was rejected on the grounds of non-clearance of the certification test. The company had made it mandatory for the completion of twelve courses as part of the joining process. He completed them and also received the certificate. But, he was rejected.

The rejection mail was sent after he applied for an exam that was proposed by the company to assess the student’s capabilities and suitability before assigning a domain to them.

Only Wipro has talked regarding the accusation.  It has claimed that the company will honour all the offer letters that have been declined to deserving candidates in a phased manner. However, Infosys and Tech Mahindra have not yet opened up about the circumstances.

Sources say that the IT firm has delayed the onboarding process of the recruits by three to four months.

Several students have talked about their grievances on the LinkedIn platform.

A student took over his social media handle and talked about the difficulties during the orientation at HCL technologies, he stated, where he was placed in the company a year ago. Despite the long duration, the company has not provided any accurate start date and has not answered any of his queries.

However, an HCL Tech representative has stated that the company is not experiencing any difficulty with the onboarding process and that everything is proceeding based on the schedule.

The operating revenues and deal wins have reduced in the IT firms. The margins are under pressure due to wage hikes and supply-side pressure. The Slowdown in the economy of the West affecting the revenue generation and deal wins could be attributed to the slowdown of the tech companies.

To take control of the situation Nascent Information Technology Senate (NITES) has requested the Ministry of Labour and Employment to check the delay in the recruitment process for the onboarding of students in Wipro.

Wipro has initially offered 3.5 lakh INR to the graduates and has even promised to increase their salaries to 6.5 lakh on the condition that they would clear the training program with 60 percent and above marks.

The unpaid internship started around April 2022 and ended in July 2022. The joining process should have been completed in August 2022, but the company kept putting up the joining or the onboarding process.

The IT firms are sole to be blamed for jeopardizing the career of many employees and trainees around the country. Companies tend to demonstrate their ethics and moral values on the surface, but in reality, these are all superficial things and are leading to crony capitalism.

Students

The dishonesty of the companies, to be precise, the tech giants in India having a reputation around the world, has proved to be burdensome and harassing to the students as well as the families.

Their approaches have been misleading those who are new to the employment sector and have relied on a particular position in respectable firms for their source of employment.
