“Prime Minister Laments India’s Woeful 21st Century Public Transport System, Highlights Infrastructure Woes”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the benefits of modernizing the public transportation system during a flag-off event for two Vande Bharat Express trains in Mumbai on Friday. In the recently released Union Budget, a historic allocation of Rs 10 lakh crore has been made towards infrastructure development. This marks a significant increase of five times the amount allocated over the last nine years. These issues need to be addressed in order to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the Indian rail transport system.

The biggest problem that the railways are facing at the moment is the choking of important routes, a senior railway spokesperson has revealed. The spokesperson also said that the railways are facing an increasing demand for power in India, and a shortage of power has become a major issue. It is therefore becoming imperative to locate power-efficient technology in Railway systems that will help tackle this problem as well as ecological concerns.

India has decided to modernize its rail transport networks by launching the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The DFC is an ambitious programme that involves the construction of two corridors- the Eastern Corridor from Ludhiana to Dankuni, covering a length of 1,839 km; and the Western Corridor from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai, covering 1,499 km. This will promote a seamless movement of rail freight traffic.
