But Tandon knew that building a community was only the first step. The next phase was offering consumers a wide range of high-quality products. Healthkart expanded into retailing protein powders, vitamins, and nutritional supplements, carefully curating its inventory to ensure that every item met rigorous quality standards. To enhance customer trust, the company also set up a call center where health advisors helped consumers choose products best suited to their needs.

The results were remarkable. Healthkart quickly achieved annual revenue of ₹50 lakh and completed 30,000 transactions within the first year. Nearly half of these orders came from Tier II and Tier III cities, a testament to Tandon’s vision of bridging the healthcare gap in underserved areas.

Branching Out: From Healthkart to 1mg

As Healthkart flourished, Tandon realized that a different challenge awaited him. The market for online medicine delivery was ripe for disruption, but it demanded a unique focus. Rather than diluting Healthkart’s core identity, he made the astute decision to spin off the medicine delivery business into a separate entity.

In 2015, that entity took on the name 1mg, inspired by the address of Healthkart’s first office on MG Road. The move proved to be a masterstroke. While Healthkart continued its impressive growth, 1mg emerged as India’s foremost digital healthcare platform, boasting a database of 100,000 medicines and rapidly expanding to smaller cities like Kanpur, Indore, and Ludhiana.

The platform also introduced home-based diagnostic tests, created private-label supplements under brands like MuscleBlaze and Incredio, and built a reputation for transparency. By empowering consumers with detailed product information, it not only cultivated trust but also positioned itself as a thought leader in the burgeoning digital healthcare space.

Scaling New Heights: Investors Take Note

Tandon’s vision and execution attracted significant interest from investors. Between 2015 and 2019, 1mg raised multiple rounds of funding from renowned venture capital firms and strategic healthcare investors, including Maverick Capital Ventures, HBM Healthcare AG, Sequoia Capital, and Omidyar Network. These investments allowed 1mg to scale its operations, improve its technology, and expand its footprint to over 20,000 pincodes across India.

By 2019, 1mg was serving more than 70 million unique patients and had become a household name. Its revenue climbed to ₹1,700 crore, driven by a combination of prescription medicine deliveries, over-the-counter health products, diagnostic services, and an ever-growing base of loyal customers.

The Tata Acquisition: A Game-Changing Moment

The next chapter in Tandon’s journey unfolded in June 2021, when Tata Digital acquired a 65% stake in 1mg. This acquisition was more than a business deal; it was a powerful validation of the value 1mg had created under Tandon’s leadership. Tata’s backing provided the scale and resources needed to further integrate healthcare into the digital fabric of India.

Today, under Tata’s wing, 1mg has grown into a ₹10,000 crore company, serving 70 million monthly users across five languages. With over one crore app downloads and a market share of 31%, it is the undisputed leader in India’s digital healthcare space.
