Open Letter To Hon’ble Mr Justice N.V. Ramana, The Chief Justice Of India, For Taking Steps To Prevent Fake News, Disinformation, Propaganda News On Facebook
Respected Sir/Madam,
My name is Nitin Naresh, and I am a resident of New Delhi, India.
I want to divert your kind attention to a grave matter of national security and importance.
In the last few months, the country has regularly seen a surge in the riots between multiple communities and religions, and there is a massive surge in fake news. Manipulated videos of these incidents are being shared to provoke people and spread misinformation and hostility between groups of people from different religions and communities.
Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram, have become very strong, comprehensive tools and a hub for spreading fake news by people who create fake profiles and spread such information.
I want to divert your kind attention to one such Facebook profile with Zark Muckerburg. This is made by changing the first alphabet of the first name and last name of the person who is the founder of the company Mark Zuckerburg.
The link to the profile is https://www.facebook.com/bhasker.sharma.564/.
The more surprising thing is that the person is openly spreading fake news, videos on multiple groups and pages on Facebook, and despite reporting this profile as a fake almost 10-15 times, Facebook keeps sending me the message which says
“We didn’t remove Zark Muckerburg’s profile
Case number: 1858887564317003
Nitin, our technology, reviewed your report against our Community Standards. Ultimately, we decided not to take the profile down.
We take action on profiles that pose a danger to other people or harm the community.
If there’s something specific on this profile that you think we should review (e.g. a photo), please report the content itself.
Thanks again for helping us keep Facebook safe and welcoming for everyone.”
I want to mention that Facebook has been fined in several countries for not abiding by the rules and regulations of the nations, including the USA, Australia, European Union.
I would therefore like to request that some concrete measures and steps should be taken on Facebook in the name of national security.
- Facebook should be strictly ordered to verify every profile of people creating their accounts on Facebook through mobile phones. As we all know, mobile phones in India can not be obtained without an aadhaar card. All our mobile phones are directly attached to our aadhaar cards; thus, one should make sure that to use Facebook, one should verify the profile using mobile. We can easily track the shapes of the people spreading fake news and profile.
- Instead of AI, a real team of people should be present in the complaint section so that whenever any content or profile is reported can be checked with real people.
The above two steps are enough to control 80% of fake news and misinformation in the country.
With warm Regards,
Founder
