GeekWire Calendar Picks: Race science, a speedy hackathon, modern mentorship, and more

— As social beings, friendship is necessary for most of us in regard to our mental health. But recently, scientists have discovered the bond of friendship may be more important than other aspects of our life in a variety of ways. In The Science of Friendship: Your Most Essential Relationship? science journalist Lydia Denworth will talk about how new research has clarified friendship in some ways but blurred the lines in others. The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 at The Pacific Science Center.
— Race science has a murky history. Award-winning science journalist, author and broadcaster Angela Saini will talk with Seattle University faculty member and journalist Ruchika Tulshyan about her latest book, Superior: The Return of Race Science at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Seattle University.
— It’s easy to find hackathons that take place over the course of a day or even multiple days. But a team of MIT students feels like that’s way too long. They’re hosting Hacks in a Hurry a three-hour hackathon from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Seattle Maker Space. Not only will the event be much shorter than normal hackathons, but the topic also won’t be revealed until potential hackers arrive, putting everyone on a level playing field.
