According to WHO, new cases of Corona have increased by 80% globally.  According to WHO’s weekly update, “1.5 million new corona cases” were recorded between July 10 and August 6. This represents an increase of 80%. However, there is some point for faith because the number of persons who died from Corona reduced by 57% throughout this time period.

According to WHO, instances of Corona infection have increased by 137% in Western Pacific area nations such as Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and New Zealand. The heatwave has boosted the number of cases in Northern Hemisphere nations such as America, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan. Experts predict that instances will rise owing to a lack of measures, increased heat waves, tourists, and less testing. Alas, it is human negligence, again, causing the planet to suffer.

Eris declared itself a ‘Variant of Interest’.

In light of the growing number of instances, the WHO recently classified Omicron‘s sub-variant EG.5 or Eris as a ‘variant of interest’. This variant was detected in 17% of the Corona cases in mid-July. This was 7.6% higher than in June. On July 31, one case of the Eris variety was discovered in the United Kingdom. Most of these variations are found only in the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, speculated on possible causes of the recent increase in Covid cases. He said the current terrible weather last month has resulted in greater indoor contact, such as during university degree gatherings and increased movie attendance. These gatherings might have aided in the spread of the Eris variety.

What does Variant Of Interest mean?

The WHO has designated multiple variants of concern (VOCs) and variants of interest (VOIs) based on “their assessed ability for expansion and replacement of prior variants, for resulting in new waves with increased circulation, and for illustrating the need for adjustments to public health actions,” according to the global health organisation.

According to the US National Institute of Health, a mutation is attributed as a variation of interest when these strains show particular genetic markers that are related to modifications that may increase transmissibility and limit neutralisation by antibodies.

The situation in India amid the onset of the new variant of Covid.

The new variety was discovered in India in May, although it had no effect in many instances. Since then, there has been speculation about whether India may have another Covid surge. However, specialists have not yet highlighted worries about the variant’s lethality. On the other hand, doctors highly advise taking safeguards right now rather than panicking. It is always preferable to be safe rather than sorry.

It’s also encouraging that developing variants aren’t genetically dissimilar, indicating that our immunity, vaccinations, diagnostics, and treatment are still effective in protecting us from serious illness. Time is on our side. The longer our immune systems have to grow, the better they can respond to various variants. Our antibodies may deteriorate with time, but the remaining pool represents quality rather than quantity in terms of their capacity to target multiple variants.

The new strain of Covid, which originated in the UK, saw very few instances in India (in Mumbai). “Because the positivity rate or any increase in cases has not been reported thus far, this strain may not be of great concern for India,” says Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon. “Because this is a new co-variant of the Omicron strain, infected people may experience mild Covid symptoms, but this may not cause significant harm.” The Covid strain’s fast proliferation is distinguished by increased infectivity and decreased visibility.

“However, because almost everyone has been double-vaccinated and has developed hybrid immunity, the infection spread rate may be minimal, with almost no hospitalisation,” Dr Grover explains.

Corona was withdrawn from the WHO’s list of Global Emergencies in May of this year. However, WHO Governor General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stated that while Corona is no longer a worldwide emergency, it is still a concern. The next pandemic will undoubtedly strike the world and may be much more devastating than Covid-19. In such a case, the human race must begin planning to deal with it immediately.
