BANK OF CEYLON

Sir Ernest de Silva was the first chairman of the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) when it was established in 1939. Ceylon was a British colony then, and the bank was ceremoniously opened on August 1 by the then-governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott. The British government established a banking arm for its government-related enterprises. BoC began to grow outside of Colombo two years later, in 1941. Its first branch opened in Kandy. BOC expanded into key cities, including Galle, Jaffna, Kurunegala, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Badulla, and Panadura.
