At least 32 people have been reported killed and dozens injured in an Israeli air strike on a school sheltering displaced people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

The Israeli military has confirmed that its fighter jets targeted an UNRWA school in the area.

Even as calls for ceasefire gain more momentum, a permanent end to the war on Gaza and a complete Israeli troop withdrawal is necessary for Hamas to agree to the latest ceasefire proposal, its leader says.

However, Israel’s defence chief asserts that there will not be a halt in fighting during negotiations.

Imminent Starvation

More than one million Palestinians in Gaza could face severe starvation by the middle of next month if hostilities continue, UN agencies warn.

However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel is “prepared for a very intense operation” along its border with Lebanon, where Israeli troops have exchanged near-daily fire with Hezbollah fighters for almost eight months.

At least 36,586 people have been killed and 83,074 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7.

The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attacks is at least 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Israel has openly attacked UNRWA shelters in Gaza multiple times.

The latest attack on a UNRWA school in the Nuseirat refugee camp is just one instance in a series of Israeli strikes on buildings run by the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees during its war on Gaza.

Details of the Situation of the Israeli Air Strike

• An estimated 455 internally displaced people have been killed while sheltering at UNRWA facilities in Gaza since October, according to UNRWA’s most recent situation report.

• In the Nuseirat refugee camp, UNRWA schools have been targeted repeatedly. Seven people were killed when a school-turned-UNRWA shelter was targeted three times between April 11 and 13, the agency said.

• There have been 430 incidents targeting 186 UNRWA premises since October, with many buildings targeted multiple times by Israeli forces.

• UNRWA ran 183 schools in Gaza before Israel’s war on the territory. Those schools were converted into shelters after the start of the war in October, with approximately one million people seeking refuge in school buildings in the early months of the war.

UN Warns of Disease Threat as ‘Mountains of Trash’ Fester in Gaza Heat

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that “deadly diseases could soon run rampant” in the Gaza Strip, where people are living “alongside mountains of trash and raw sewage”.

UNICEF executive director, Catherine Russell, made the warning alongside a video posted to social media, which featured children scavenging among high mounds of waste rotting in the open beside encampments for Gaza’s displaced people.

Russell and the video warn that waste mountains are piling up across the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s war on the territory, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the suspension of basic services such as waste collection.

The threat of disease has increased “with summer heat and lack of water, food, and health care,” Russell said. “The war must stop,” she adds.

Israeli Military Admits to Attack by Jet Fighters on UNRWA School Shelter

The Israeli military has confirmed that it bombed a UN school shelter in what appears to be the same attack that killed at least 29 people in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Israel’s military stated that its fighter jets targeted a UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) school, which was allegedly being used by the “terrorist organization Hamas.”

“The terrorists directed terror from the area of the school, using it as a civilian location and shelter. In the attack, terrorists were eliminated who were planning to carry out attacks and promote terrorism against our forces in the immediate time frame,” the Israeli military said in a post on X.

The military added that “many steps were taken to reduce the chance of harm to those not involved.”

However, aid groups have described an “insane escalation of violence” in Gaza, with at least 70 bodies and more than 300 wounded arriving at the Al-Aqsa Hospital in the past 24 hours alone.

Staff at Al-Aqsa say one of the two generators at the central Gaza facility is now out of service and called on the international community for help to save people from “certain death.”

Meanwhile, A Palestinian journalist has been attacked as thousands of ultranationalist Israelis paraded through occupied East Jerusalem as part of an annual “Jerusalem Day” flag march.

Israel’s Display of ‘Inhumanity’ Will Have Long-Lasting Repercussions: Ashrawi

Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian political leader and former member of the Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee, stated that Israel’s display of “inhumanity, immorality, and vicious drive for death and destruction” will have long-lasting ramifications, “particularly within Israel.”

In a brief social media post, the veteran Palestinian politician emphasized that words or even real images cannot encompass the level of violence exhibited by the “Israeli occupation.”

“The human mind, like the human conscience, is in despair,” she wrote. “The ramifications will be felt for a long time, particularly within Israel.”

Don’t Let the Occupied West Bank ‘Become Another Gaza,’ Says UN Official

Amongst all the chaos, Muhannad Hadi, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for the Middle East peace process, has warned that Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are facing increasing violence and pressure and “must be supported” to prevent the territory from becoming “another Gaza.”

“More than 500 Palestinians have been killed across the West Bank since October and thousands have been displaced,” Hadi said in a social media post.

“Houses have been demolished. Infrastructure has been destroyed. Health facilities attacked. People here are suffering. Women and children are being harassed. People have no access to clean water. No more access to education or health facilities,” Hadi detailed, though he did not explicitly mention the role of Israeli forces and settlers in the violence against Palestinians.

“All eyes are on Gaza. But the situation in the West Bank is volatile. This must stop,” he added.
