PM Modi Engages in Talks with Sri Lankan President to Enhance Economic Cooperation

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extensive discussions with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, with the primary focus on enhancing economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries. The talks covered a wide range of issues aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for further collaboration in various sectors. Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived in Delhi on Thursday for a two-day visit, marking the first tour of India by a senior Sri Lankan leader since the island nation faced an unprecedented economic crisis last year. The visit is significant as it signifies both countries’ commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by Sri Lanka and strengthening the ties between India and Sri Lanka. During his visit, President Wickremesinghe aimed to engage in productive discussions with Indian leaders to explore opportunities for economic cooperation and mutual support.

Indeed, last year, India provided significant financial assistance to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, amounting to approximately USD 4 billion. This assistance included lines of credit to support Sri Lanka’s purchases of essential commodities such as food and fuel. The aid was aimed at assisting Sri Lanka in mitigating the impact of the economic challenges it faced at that time and reaffirming India’s commitment to being a supportive neighbor and partner in times of need.

The financial assistance further strengthened the economic cooperation between the two countries and demonstrated India’s willingness to stand by Sri Lanka during difficult times.

In addition to providing direct financial assistance to Sri Lanka, New Delhi also extended guarantees to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help facilitate Sri Lanka’s access to a USD 2.9 billion bailout package from the international financial institution. These guarantees aimed to support Sri Lanka’s efforts in managing its economic challenges and stabilizing its financial situation during the crisis.

By backing the IMF bailout package, India played a role in bolstering international support for Sri Lanka and contributing to the country’s economic recovery and stability.
