On 20 July, India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh granted bail in sexual harassment case
On Thursday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court granted regular bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is the outgoing chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was facing allegations of sexual harassment involving women wrestlers. Prior to this, the court had provided him with a two-day interim bail on Tuesday.
In the case of alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers, the court granted bail to Vinod Tomar, who is the suspended assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), along with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing chief of WFI and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both were required to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 25,000 each to secure their release from custody.
In addition to the bail amount, the court imposed several conditions on the accused individuals to ensure the integrity of the legal proceedings and the safety of the complainants and witnesses. Some of these conditions may include:
1. Non-interference with complainants and witnesses: Both Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar are prohibited from directly or indirectly influencing, threatening, or inducing the complainants and witnesses involved in the case. This measure aims to prevent any potential tampering with evidence or intimidation of those involved in the legal process.
2. Surrendering of passports: The accused may be required to surrender their passports to the court or authorities to prevent them from leaving the country without permission. This condition ensures that they remain available for any further legal proceedings and investigations.
3. Regular attendance in court: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar may be required to attend all court hearings and proceedings as mandated by the court. This ensures that they participate in the legal process and do not abscond during the trial.
4. Reporting to the police: The accused individuals may need to report to the local police station at specified intervals as part of their bail conditions. This helps in monitoring their activities and compliance with the bail conditions.
The imposition of these conditions is standard practice in criminal cases, especially those involving serious allegations like sexual harassment. It is done to maintain the fairness of the legal process, protect the rights of all parties involved, and ensure that the accused individuals cooperate fully with the investigation and trial. Failure to comply with these conditions may result in the revocation of their bail and potential additional legal consequences.
One of the conditions is that they must not directly or indirectly influence or threaten the complainants or witnesses involved in the case. This measure is taken to ensure a fair and unbiased legal process and to protect the rights and safety of those involved in the proceedings.
Another condition imposed by the court is that the accused are not allowed to leave the country without prior permission from the court. This measure is meant to ensure that they remain available for further legal proceedings and investigations related to the case.
By setting these conditions, the court aims to maintain the integrity of the legal process and ensure that the accused adhere to their legal obligations while the case progresses.
