New York Gears Up for Trump’s Surrender: City Braces for Barricades and Closed Courtrooms.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to turn himself in to authorities on Tuesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into claims that he paid hush money to a pornstar. The courtroom had been set up for Trump’s arraignment after he was indicted in the grand jury probe.
The porn star claimed Trump had an illicit sexual encounter with her years earlier, and a grand jury on Thursday indicted Trump in the case.
Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina stated in television interviews on Sunday that after reviewing the indictment once it is received, he will decide what legal actions to take next. But it’s typical for defence lawyers to do both; he brushed off inquiries about whether he would request a venue change or submit a motion to dismiss the case as premature.
Trump calls the investigation a political witch hunt, and several of his staunchest backers, including Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, say they’ll be protesting in New York on Tuesday.
The downtown courthouse (which houses the criminal and supreme courts) will be closed to the public on the day of Trump’s arrival, according to a source in the judicial system.
What’s the Situation?
The ex-president is scheduled to make a court appearance on criminal charges on Tuesday afternoon. An inquiry by a grand jury into hush money paid to a pornstar resulted in the star’s indictment. It has been claimed that Trump and the porn performer had a sexual experience many years ago. This is significant because he is the first U.S. president to ever be indicted for a crime.
Trump claims it’s an attempt to discredit him. The NYPD assured Reuters that there were no real dangers to the city. Although the sight of the former president being charged with a crime was sure to receive significant media attention, it is still unclear whether or not his appearance would attract a sizable number of demonstrators.
Trump Would Travel Back to Florida.
According to a statement made by a Trump adviser, Donald Trump is planning to travel from Florida to New York on Monday, spend the night at Trump Tower, and then travel to the courthouse in the early morning hours of Tuesday.
It is not yet apparent whether a substantial number of demonstrators will show out to see the former president appear in court, despite the fact that the spectacle of the former president facing criminal accusations was expected to draw tremendous attention from the media. Although Donald Trump was born and raised in New York, the city he calls home only gave him 23% of the vote in the presidential election of 2020 and only 18% in the election of 2016.
Trump, a native of New York, received only 23% of the city’s vote in 2020 and 18% in 2016, despite being a resident of the city.
Earlier, a major riot was sparked by Trump’s call for protests.
Notably, former President Trump falsely claimed that the 2020 U.S. presidential election was rigged and claimed that he had won. This prompted his supporters to assault the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, sparking a violent melee.
Nonetheless, many of Trump’s fans are voicing reservations about taking part in such actions, despite his calls for widespread protests.
The New York City Police Department made a statement in which they claimed, “The department will ensure that everyone is able to peacefully express their rights and will be prepared to respond as required.”
Barriers Set Up And Roads Blocked in New York.
As they prepare for potential protests in advance of Trump’s anticipated surrender to prosecutors on Tuesday, the New York City police have erected metal barriers surrounding Trump Tower and have closed nearby highways.
On Monday, it’s expected that Trump will board a trip from Florida to New York. The next morning, Tuesday, he will travel to the courthouse after spending the night at Trump Tower.
Although the sight of the former president being charged with a crime was expected to receive significant media attention, it is not yet known whether the former president’s appearance would draw a sizable number of protesters. Trump barely garnered 23% of the vote in his home state of New York in 2020, down from 18% in 2016.
Greene, one of Trump’s most ardent backers in the House, says she will attend the demonstration that the New York Young Republican Club claims are planned at a park across the street from the courtroom. After Trump’s arraignment in New York on Tuesday, he will give a speech in Florida that same evening.
The party will take place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort when he returns from New York, where he is expected to voluntarily turn himself in. His supporters are anticipated to join him in Florida as he attempts to project an air of toughness and resistance and uses the accusations as a political tool to support his bid for the presidency in 2024.
Several social media users, according to the website Site Intelligence Group, which monitors online extremism, have called for the deaths of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the members of the jury that found Donald Trump guilty.
Angry Trump supporters invaded the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, after he falsely claimed to have won the previous election. Even after Trump asked for them, many Trump supporters have voiced reluctance about participating in public demonstrations online because of fear of being detained.
