General Motors Reclaims Top US Automaker Spot After Beating Toyota And 2.5% Rise In Sales
From rival Toyota Motor Co., General Motors Co. grasped the top spot in United States (U.S.) auto sales in 2022 as it was better able to meet strong demand for cars and trucks despite supply shortages across the industry. General Motors Co shares rose 2.7% to $34.75 in afternoon trade on Wednesday after the company reported sale of 2,274,088 vehicles i.e., a 2.5% rise in sales of 2022 in a closely watched race, up from 2,108,458 pieces of Toyota.
Inventory shortages stemming from rising material costs and persistent chip squeaks have slowed production at many automakers and kept prices high for cars and trucks. Asian brands were hit hardest. “Toyota is still among the tightest in terms of inventory,” said Cox Automotive Chief, Economist Charlie Chesbrough. The Japanese automaker lowered its target of full-year production in November, it fell 8.6% in 2022. However, Toyota management said some positive signs are emerging and the pace of stockpiling is slow but steady.
