What Elon Musk is Doing to Your Twitter Feed? What change have You Seen?
Elon Musk, the new owner of the social media platform, has been trying to show that members of the last leadership team are accountable for the alleged suppression of right-wing voices by granting select journalists access to some of the company’s internal contacts of “The Twitter Files.”
The Trust and Safety Council, a crucial advisory group made up of multiple independent civil rights, human rights, and other organisations, was disbanded by Musk this week. The company created the council in 2016 to negotiate with concerns including hate speech, harassment, child exploitation, suicide, self-harm, and other problems on the website.
What effects do they have on the daily content you see in your feed? The measures provide an explanation for Musk’s intent on improving Twitter’s place in the US political right. He doesn’t advocate unrestrained expression; rather, he wants to alter how messages are amplified or hidden.
What are Twitter files?
Several writers, including former Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi and opinion columnist Bari Weiss, have teamed with Musk since he bought Twitter for $44 billion (approximately Rs. 3,37,465 crore) in late October.
They started tweeting about past actions taken by Twitter against funds that were believed to have broken its content guidelines earlier. They’ve added screenshots of emails and posts that show internal Twitter discussions about those options.
The report by Weiss from December 8 states that the authors “have wide and growing access to Twitter’s files.” We agreed to the terms of the news that was first announced on Twitter.
Weiss published the fifth and most recent instalment of his series on the conversations that took place before Twitter decided to permanently halt then-President Donald Trump’s account on January 8, 2021, “due to the risk of other activation of violence,” following the deadly uprising at the US Capitol two days earlier.

What is lacking?

The journalists have relied on Twitter personnel to provide other documents, even though they seem to have unrestricted access to the company’s public Slack message platform.

Who’s monitoring posts on Twitter now?

The platform’s ability to enforce its rules against harmful misinformation hate speech, and violent threats, both domestically and internationally, was called into question by the departure of so many staff. While some suspect accounts and spam can be found using automated methods, others need a more thorough human inspection.
The cuts will probably force Twitter to concentrate its content moderation attempts on regions with stricter rules regulating social media networks, like Europe, where tech companies risk particles with high under the new Digital Services Act if they don’t take steps to prevent hate speech and misinformation, says Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at the Fletcher School at Tufts University.

Has an effect been felt?
Researchers and advocacy organisations have noted a surge in messages that use racial slurs or insult Jews, gays, lesbians, and transgender persons after Musk bought Twitter.
The posts were frequently made by people who said they were trying to test Twitter’s new restrictions. Musk asserts that Twitter responded promptly to lower the posts’ general reputation and that there has been a decline in hate speech engagement since he bought the firm, a claim that is challenged by studies.
The reinstatement of previously excluded individuals’ accounts, which includes Trump, the parody website The Babylon Bee, the comedian Kathy Griffin, the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson, and Ye before he was banned once more, is the clearest sign of change at Twitter.
To stop the hate and false information from spreading on the platform, Twitter’s old guard has been mass-removing accounts of neo-Nazis and white supremacists, including QAnon adherents and Andrew Anglin, the publisher of the white nationalist website Daily Stormer.
Furthermore, some well-known Twitter users, including Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had been earlier barred for spreading false information regarding COVID-19, have started tweeting false claims about the efficacy of vaccines and hoax treatments.
Musk, who has self-spread factually incorrect information about COVID-19, returned to the topic this week with a tweet that derided transgender pronouns and called for criminal charges against Dr Anthony Fauci, the top spreading condition expert in the nation and one of the leaders of the country’s COVID response.
Musk, who describes himself as a “free-speech absolutist,” has said that he wants to allow all legally permissible content on Twitter while reducing abusive and unpleasant remarks. Musk’s support for “freedom of expression, not freedom of reach” makes it more likely that Twitter will fail to remove harmful content from its platform and instead leave it online without pushing or amplifying it to other users.
After Twitter fired the majority of its policy-making executives and outside experts, Musk, however, frequently seems to be the deciding factor as to what crosses the line. Musk himself said last month that he was firing Ye after the performer formerly known as Kanye West uploaded an image of a swastika coupled with a Star of David, a post that was not only extremely offensive but also legal. The behaviour brought up issues with the rules dictating what may and cannot be shared on the website.
