The Covid-19 saga re-surfaced in India after the first case of Omicron subvariant BQ.1 was reported in Pune, Maharashtra on 17th October. This comes after the BF.7 subvariant was detected in Gujarat. The health authorities confirmed that the BQ.1 was detected during the genomic sequencing of a Pune resident’s sample.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that new subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are the mutation BA.5 which is a subvariant of Omicron.
As per a researcher at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), all SARS-CoV-2 strains are descendants of the Omicron variety. The researcher added that they have not encountered a completely unique strain of the virus since Omicron first appeared in January of this year and that these subvariants, or sublineages, should not be disregarded because they may also result in surges. However, the BA.2.75 sublineage of Omicron’s BA.2 variety is still dominant in India.
It may be mentioned that the BA.5 variant was the reason of nearly 60 percent Covid cases in the United States back then. This variant was first reported in Botswana in Southern Africa and has become a dominant variant across the globe since then.

The Centre for Disease Control added that both BQ.1 and its descendent BQ.1.1, were rapidly spreading within a month of their initial discovery.
The state also reported new a new Omicron sub-variant, Covid XBB, of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has been detected in Kerela and other parts of India.
The Omicron variant XBB is a recombinant lineage between two Omicron sublineages BA.2.75 and BJ. The fast-spreading variety was recently observed to have increased across Singapore.
Besides, United States top immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci recently showed concerns about the spread of omicron’s BA.5 subvariant. Fauci said that the two subvariants have dangerous potential or traits that might evade some of their efforts.

Meanwhile, citing evasive XBB, winter, and the festive season, the Maharashtra government issued a COVID-19 spike warning. According to a notice from the health department, the state-reported XBB strain showed a growth advantage over BA.2.75 and immunity evasive property.
The state has also witnessed the BA.2.3.20 and BQ.1 varieties.
Data from the state authorities show that during the week that ended on October 16, COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra rose by 17.7%. In India, the total number of covid cases stands at 4,46,32,430.
