Is Newly Launched Nothing the Latest Budget Smartphone in 2022?
With the advancement of technology, our life revolves around the compact-sized asset that we carry in our pockets. This has been accurately manipulated by the investors as new mobile phones are currently being launched in the market. Statistics show that the proportion of cash market turnover devoted to mobile phones has jumped from 5.3% in June 2019 to 18.7% in June 2022. These data have been revealed by BSE.
As the market attracts 75 percent GenZ and millennials, the investors are working hard to draw their attraction to purchasing their devices.
Nothing has entered the race to become one of the most hyped, and hottest smartphones of 2022.
But is nothing worth the hype or a complete thumbs down?
The Nothing Phone 1 was designed by the Nothing technology Limited. comes with the tagline ‘warm, bold, and full of soul’. An interesting fact about the device is the phone is launched by the co-founder of OnePlus, one of the premium Android smartphones all around the world. But, the brand is not a sub-brand of OnePlus. Instead, it is a separate brand that may prove to be a strong competitor against Apple and many small Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
Nothing Phone 1 is the second product launched by Pei after the firm launched its first gadget, a set of wireless earbuds called Ear 1. The earphones have received a good response from the buyers as 560,000 units have been sold so far.
The manufacturers have claimed that the phone’s specifications are similar to Apple’s latest iPhone. This is a big statement to make for a brand phone, which has recently made its debut.
What makes ‘Nothing’ Stand Out?
The most interesting aspect about Phone 1 is its design. The device comes with a transparent back which shows off a unique pattern of shapes, and lines. The manufacturers credited the inspiration to the modernized version of the New York City subway map by the Italian designer Massimo Vignelli during the 1970s.
Another feature of the phone that adds to the quirk is that the device pops up when the user receives a call or app notification. The phone is set up with 900 small LED lights that flicker periodically with a range of robotic-sounding ringtones when the user gets a call from someone.
A feature called ‘Flip to Glyph’ brings Nothing a level up, which mutes the phone when the user turns its face down, only displaying the blinking lights when notifications are received in the phone.
Pei has acknowledged that the references are drawn out from many subjects, from sony products to luxurious devices. Pei, has shared his opinions stating that innovations have slowed down after the launch of the first device from Apple. The Chinese-Swedish entrepreneur partnered with Elon Musk’s electric vehicle firm to bring innovation to the mobile phone segment.
This comes with a feature that enables Tesla users to open their car’s doors through their device.

Pros And Cons of Nothing Phone1:
Pros:
- The unique semi-transparent pattern of the device levels up the phone to another notch. Most of the devices launched this year have monotonous patterns. The phone symbolizes that innovation has not died yet in the smartphone industry. The device will give the feel of an iPhone at a comparably lower price.
- The display is noteworthy as the device comes with a vivid screen and 1200 nits peak brightness to overcome the sunlight legibility.
- The phone is not overloaded with unnecessary third-party apps, and there is no bloatware.
- The manufacturers have promised to provide three years of major AndroidOS updates for three years, and four years of security updates at the given price range.
- An incredible feature of the device is that it comes with a IP rating (IP53), which makes it water resistant. This feature is pretty great for a device that comes under 35,000 INR.
Cons:
- The device has excellent daylight photography. However, it misses out on finer details.
- Another issue of concern is the weight of the device. The device feels a bit heavy in hand.
- Many brands have removed the in-box charger with mobile phones. This includes Samsung and Apple. It seems that Nothing is taking the idea from the start. This could seem to be a dealbreaker for some who would spend a great deal of money in a phone without the charger.
Moreover, the charger seems overpriced as the market is currently selling the 45W charger at 2500 INR.
The main question arises if the new phone brand can survive the test of time against its strongest competitors. Apple and Samsung contribute a 40% share of the smartphone market. These two brands have dominated the smartphone market over the years, and overcoming the competitors would seem to be a challenge for the newly launched smartphone brand.
Verdict:
Seeing that around 2,00,000 people have purchased the device all around the world we can not undermine the probability that Nothing can make a breakthrough in the realm of smartphones. Nevertheless, the brand has to survive the test of time in the global crisis.
