Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa may offer his resignation today
Local news outlets say that Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to step down this week so that the new Cabinet can take over.
Colombo Gazette said that Prime Minister Rajapaksa would talk to the local council members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Then he will announce his resignation later.
In a special meeting on Friday, President Gotbaya Rajapaksa asked the Prime Minister to step down to end the political crisis in the country. This report came after that meeting.
Colombo Gazette said that once the Prime Minister steps down, the President will likely ask all the political parties in Parliament to work together to form a Cabinet.
Earlier, the leader of the opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sajith Premadasa, said that he would not accept the position of prime minister in an interim government.
This comes at a significant time, as it is known that Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa agreed with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s request to step down as the economy gets worse.
In an interview with a Sri Lankan news outlet, SJB National Organizer Tissa Attsnayake said, “Premadasa will not accept the premiership of an interim government, but SJB will support an interim government. Under certain conditions.”
Also, on Saturday, Colombo Gazette reported that SJB had decided to back a proposal from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) that said the current President should step down. The Executive Presidency should be done away with.
Ajith Perera, an attorney, said that the SJB would meet with the BASL to discuss the problem. He also said that the proposals made by the BASL are the same as the SJB’s policy.
Sri Lanka, which is in a lot of trouble, declared a state of emergency on Friday after a strike that shut down the country and protested over its foreign debt for the second time in five weeks.
In the meantime, Sri Lanka is having trouble getting enough food and electricity, so it has to ask its neighbours for help. A drop in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic is blamed for the lack of foreign currency, which led to the recession. As a result, the country can’t buy enough fuel and gas, and the people aren’t getting even the most essential things.
Because of the economy, there have been massive protests with calls for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down.

Also, political sources say that Prasanna Ranatunga, Nalaka Godahewa, and Ramesh Pathirana have all agreed with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to step down as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
