What is computer hardware?

Any analogue or digital computer component is called computer hardware, which is collectively used to refer to those components. Software refers to the written, machine-readable instructions and programs that tell computers what to do and when to execute them. In contrast, hardware refers to the tangible elements of a computer.

Hardware and software complement each other. A computer needs both hardware and software to function efficiently and produce valuable results.

There are two types of hardware in computers: internal and external. Hardware components are generally internal to a computer and are needed for regular operation, while external components add or enhance its capabilities.

What are internal computer hardware components?

Programs or operating systems (OS) deliver instructions to internal components, which they collectively process or store. Among them are:

  • Motherboard: This component incorporates the central processing unit (CPU) and other essential components that function as the central hub for the rest of the hardware.
  • CPU: CPUs are responsible for processing and executing digital instructions from various programs; their clock speed determines how quickly the computer processes data.
  • RAM: Programs can quickly access information stored in this type of memory. Data stored in RAM is volatile, so it is erased when the computer shuts down.
  • Hard disk drives: A storage device is a physical device that stores both permanent and temporary data in different formats. Examples include programs, operating systems, files, photos, etc.
  • A solid-state drive (SSD): Based on NAND flash memory technology, SSDs are solid-state storage devices that can store data even when the computer is off; SSDs are non-volatile, so they can safely store data even when the computer is turned off.
  • Optical drive: A device’s drive bay houses the device’s hard drive in addition to digital video discs and compact discs with read-only memories.
  • Heat sink: It is a passive piece of hardware that uses heat to regulate/reduce components’ temperatures to have the best chance of remaining functional. Usually, the CPU, which produces the most heat of all internal parts, is installed with a heat sink.
  • Graphics processing unit: Often, it serves as an extension to the main CPU to process graphics data.
  • Network interface card (NIC): NICs are circuit boards or chips that enable a computer to connect to a network. They are also known as network adapters or local area network adapters, and they are used typically for connecting to Ethernet networks.

Besides the USB port, power supply, transistor, and chip, other components of computers can also be considered internal hardware.

What are external hardware components?

Hardware external to a computer is called peripheral hardware and is either controlling input or output functions through external connections. Devices related to these kinds of software either provide instructions to the software (inputs) or produce results of its execution (outputs).

Here are some components commonly found in input hardware:

  • Mouse: Using a mouse, an individual can move a cursor around a computer screen and interact with objects. A mouse can be wired or wireless.
  • Keyboard: Users can input text, numbers, and special characters using keyboards that feature a standard QWERTY keyset.
  • Microphone: Computer-based audio communication relies on microphones, which convert sounds into electrical signals.
  • Camera: Visual images are captured by a camera and streamed to a computer or network device via the computer.
  • Touchpad: Input devices like a touchpad are used to control the pointer on a screen, whether external or built into a laptop. A mouse like this is typically an alternative to an external one.
  • USB flash drive: An external USB flash drive is a removable memory device that interfaces with a computer using a USB port and uses flash memory.
  • Memory card: An external storage device, such as a CompactFlash card, in which files or media can be stored is a memory card.

A joystick, a stylus, and a scanner are the input hardware components.

Hardware vs software

Legacy Computer Software and Hardware Tech Support

The computer’s hardware consists of the components that store and execute the software’s instructions. Essentially, the software is the part of the device that facilitates interaction between the user and hardware. Examples include:

  • Operating systems and related utilities;
  • A program that controls the behaviour of a computer; and
  • These applications usually process User-supplied data.

Due to their non-physical nature, virtual keyboards are also considered software on mobile devices and laptop computers.

To ensure that a computer produces useful output, both the software and hardware must function properly.

Viruses, Trojan horses, spyware, and worms are examples of malicious software that can affect computer programs and the operating system. Malware does not affect hardware, however. There are, however, other ways that malware can affect a system. Depending on its size, it may necessitate a large amount of memory or even fill up the hard drive on a computer. A computer may become slower when this happens, and legitimate software may not function properly. Users may also be unable to access files in the computer’s hardware storage due to malware.

What is hardware virtualization?

Does Hardware Even Matter Anymore?

Physical computing resources are virtualized to abstract them from the software that uses them. The term “hardware virtualization” refers to the use of software to create virtual versions of hardware instead of using tangible, physical hardware for some computing functions.

Hardware virtualization is executed by host software on a hardware platform, sometimes called platform virtualization or server virtualization. A hypervisor creates a virtualized version of internal hardware through virtual machines. This way, OSes and applications can share hardware resources from a single physical machine and utilize them more efficiently.

Infrastructure as a service ( IaaS) is a delivery model that uses the Internet to provide hardware resources to clients. Cloud computing hardware virtualization come together to form IaaS. Cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, offer all the components that would typically be found in an on-premises data centre, such as servers, storage, networking, and software that enables virtualization.

Typical Hardware-as-a-Service (HaaS) providers host only hardware, but not software. In contrast, IaaS and CSPs provide both hardware and software. In addition to infrastructure components, a SaaS provider typically provides the following additional services:

  • billing
  • monitoring
  • log access
  • security
  • load balancing
  • clustering

CSPs generally provide automated backup, replication, and disaster recovery as a storage resilience service.

What is hardware as a service?

What is a Hardware Platform? - Definition, Types and More

People and businesses have been buying computer hardware for years and replacing it or upgrading it periodically. However, they can also lease physical or virtual hardware from a service provider. The provider’s responsibility is to keep the hardware, including its physical components and software, up to date.

HaaS stands for ‘Haas as a Service’. A major benefit of HaaS is that it allows organizations to switch from a capital expense to a more economical operating expense budget due to a reduction in hardware purchases and maintenance.

Additionally, since most HaaS offerings are pay-as-you-go, it is easier to control costs for organizations while still having access to the hardware they need for their business continuity and operational requirements.

An MSP (managed service provider) installs physical components on the customer’s site for HaaS. In service-level agreements ( SLAs ), both parties are responsible for their roles. Depending on the MSP’s fee structure, the customer may pay a monthly fee if they wish to use the hardware or be included in it as part of the installation, monitoring and maintenance fees.

MSPs are responsible for repairing or replacing hardware if it breaks down or becomes outdated. As part of hardware decommissioning, proprietary data may be wiped, physical hard drives may be destroyed, and old equipment may be certified legally recycled, depending on how the SLA is laid out.

Rapid technological progress is taking place in the electronics and computer industries. Many of the world’s most profitable and largest companies are involved in designing and manufacturing products that keep people connected.

Hardware companies produce a wide range of advanced hardware and equipment, from personal computers and mobile phones to printers and networking equipment.
